HIKE IN BEAUTIFUL PENNSYLVANIA

Beyond learning the basics of backpacking, you get to enjoy our beautiful state during a six mile hike and a night spent in the woods. We'll start at a campground on Friday, but Saturday night we'll be out on the trail. No electricity or toilets here.

day 1 - xxx date tba

Arrive at R.B. Winter State Park Campground & settle in. Pitch your tent and crack open a cold one, as we review gear and a few Backpacking 101 lectures followed by fire starting instruction and dinner.

Day 2 - xxx date tba

Up with the sun to enjoy coffee and breakfast, break down the campsite and pack our bags. Hike about 3.5 miles to the campsite at Crocodile Spring. More instruction as we learn proper methods for setting up camp, gathering wood, collecting water, hanging a bear bag, etc. Lots of chill time followed by dinner preparation.

Day 3 - xxx date tba

Up early again to eat breakfast while the birds chirp. Breakdown camp and ensure we leave the campsite as undisturbed as possible. Quick 2 mile hike back to the campground for a closing chat and trail options for your next hike!

MEET YOUR LEADER

Sarah Schu

Professional photographer, travel guide, and meditation teacher.

As a child, Sarah grew up backpacking in the wilds of Pennsylvania. Her first pack was actually a school-sized backpack that her mom sewed a belt onto. After a couple years, she was big enough for her own child's-sized hiking backpack. Sarah would go on weekend trips with her Pop and his pals during the school year and week-long trips every July.

As an adult, Sarah remained an avid backpacker and trekker. She's climbed mountains and enjoyed adventures in countries from Ecuador to Thailand and she currently leads backpacking trips in Nepal.

She enjoys sleeping in a tent more than her own bed and if she won the lottery she could easily fill five years trekking all the trails she has mapped in her mind. This summer she plans on walking the Colorado Trail.

But why trust Sarah with your backpacking curiosities? She has over twenty years of experience that is constantly shifting and expanding. She grew up practicing old school techniques, experimented with some advice from fellow long-distance through hikers (some of which she should have trusted the research on - she'll tell you all about it), and researched the latest practices in the field. Her blend of pretrip research, DIY, always being prepared, and risk mitigation means a safe and enjoyable trip every time.

GIVING BACK

Schu was never that great at holding onto her money. She believes spreading it around is the best way for it to eventually reach its way back to her. A percentage of your program fee goes directly to a charitable donation.

Schu is still searching for the perfect charity for this retreat. She is hoping for a program that encourages children to spend more time in nature. Know of the perfect charity? Please send her an email with your suggestion.
